A weekend trip to the beautiful Sundarbans

Who doesn’t want to visit the mangrove forest of sunderbans? The best time of the year to visit the sundarbans are the winter months or the summer months. During the winter season, the land is dry. The probability of seeing tigers is quite big. Summers are also a great time to visit the jungles and see a whole lot of tigers, reptiles, and different species of birds. Sundarbans is a beautiful place to be at. The monsoon is probably not the best time to visit.

Sundarbans forest is drenched in mud and water during the monsoons. The swamps are quite risky to move around and the chance of seeing a tiger is almost nil. That is mostly the time when they take shelter due to heavy rain. Apart from the world famous royal Bengal tigers, you will be able to spot various reptiles and birds.

The hilsa festival is one of the most exciting times of the year. Sundarban specials package consists of 3 nights and 2 days that would cost you close to Rs 3200. Apart from that there are many other packages for you to enjoy. There are many places to visit while in the sundarbans such as sajnekhali or Do-Banki. We have hotels for you to rest and boats through the Hooghly River that will give you a beautiful view of the river and take you to places around the sundarbans.

We have 5 different packages for our clients. Visit our website for further details. Packages may subject to change on pick or holidays seasons. There is the standard package and the deluxe package. Some of the special attractions include the following:-

Sundarban is the largest mangrove forest located in the banks of Hooghly River. This beautiful forest is the only mangrove tiger reserve in India that is located in the extreme south, in the vicinity of Bay of Bengal. The Meghna, Ganges and the Brahmaputra meet all together to form a tributary in the banks of Bengal. This world heritage site was declared on 1987 by ICUN. It is also one of the sundarban biosphere reserves that were established by the UNESCO in the year 1980. Sundarban package tour is available online at sundarban nature tour website. Trip To Sunderban: Travel Diaries

One of the best tour I’ve made so far was the trip to Sunderban. In the mid of September, I along with my four friends decided to go for the Sundarban Tour in the weekend to enjoy the nature retreat. Our program was for 1 night and 2 days. It was the Sunderban Package Tour that we booked which included food and accomodation. We started our journey early in the morning from Sealdah to Canning railway station where our tour operator was waiting to begin the trip. Finally, we were off to Sunderbans.

Formed by the convergence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghana rivers, Sundarban is the world’s largest delta marked by the presence of mangrove forests and the abundance of Sundari trees. Sunderban is recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also considered as a Biosphere Reserve, a home to several species of animals and the well-known Royal Bengal Tiger.

Day 1

It took nearly 3 hours to reach Sonakhali. The weather was pleasant. After having a brunch, we began our trip. We journeyed through the Gosaba river on a boat, followed by Durgaduyani and Gumor rivers. The island was surrounded by lush green Palm trees which were pretty eye-soothing and relaxing. We enjoyed to see small mud houses in the village situated in the island. The village is known as Eco-village and electricity, here, is generated through solar cells. Then we reached Pakhirala where we halted for the first night.

Day 2

Next morning, we woke up at 5 a.m to continue our journey through Sunderbans. The first thing that we did is we captured the wonderful sunrise on the bank of the river which was just amazing. It freshened the mind and we were set to go ahead. Our tour operator had planned to cover Sajnekhali, Dobanki and Sudhanyakhali.
Sajnekhali rests on the other side of Pakhirala. As we reached there, we visited the Banabibi temple. Goddess Banabibi is worshipped by the fisherman and honey gatherers before they enter the forest to  through ‘khanris’ (narrow channels of water through the mangrove forest) to earn their livelihood. Thereafter, we began our long ride through the rivers and narrow creeks in Dobanki. Dobanki is said to be known for its grand Canopy Walk Watch Tower. We were thrilled to enjoy the Canopy Walk into the forest. We spotted deers, tigers, kites, crocodiles and wild cocks near the pond. After the sightseeing, we returned to Pakhirala. And from there we went back to Sonakhali to end our trip and return to Kolkata.

End of the Trip

Though we had very less time for the Sunderban Tour, but, I enjoyed my journey throughout amidst the island and rivers into the mangroves. We did not get the chance to see many animals. Just spotted few. The thing that we missed to sightsee is King Cobra. I am sure to plan again for the Sunderban Package Tour with my family to unravel many more hidden secretive lives here in the delta.

How to Visit Sundarban - A brief Details

Sundarban Tour Operators in Kolkata helps you to get access from Dhaka and Khulna also. Organizing your own trip from Munsiganj-Satkhira, Mongla or Khulna is also possible (and cheaper, if you're a shrewd negotiator), but questionably worth the hassle. However, you need a permit from the Divisional Forest Office in Khulna. With permit in hand, it's possible to hire a boat from Mongla or Dhangmari to get you to Hiron Point. From Hiron Point you will have to hire a guide to take you into the park.

Day trips from Mongla are not very interesting, and probably better avoided. After negotiating the price of a boat down to something only slightly less ridiculous you'll most likely be taken to Karamjal Wildlife Center, where there are some tame deer to feed and some monkeys, crocs and snakes in cages. But surely you didn't come all this way to see a rundown zoo filled with depressed animals and raucous Bangladeshis. Boatmen seem to want no less than Rs. 200 for the trip (locals pay Rs. 50/day), and the center charges a very steep Rs. 750/day entry fee for foreigners.

From Kolkata (India), suburban trains can take you to Canning (64 km) from where launch services are available for Sundarban. Otherwise, you can avail of buses to reach Raidighi (76 km), Najat (92 km), Sonakhali (100 km) and Namkhana (105 km) from where motorboats will take you to Sundarban.
