Sundarbans- The Land of Eclectic Varieties

Sundarban is also the home to different species of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles and fishes! Over 120 species of fishes are estimated to be found in the waters of the region.

Sundarbans are the bulkiest littoral mangrove belt in the world with a stretch of 80 km (50m) into Bangladesh and Indian hinterland from the coast. The site has been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site recently. However, the forests of the places are not only the mangroves but also swamps of last remaining stands of the mighty jungles which once covered the mighty Gangetic plain. 

The Sundarbans cover an area of 10, 500 square kilometers of which 1/3rd of the part is covered in water or the marsh areas. Since, 1966 the area have been a wildlife sanctuary, which estimate to hold around 400 Royal Bengal Tigers and about 30,000 spotted dears. 

Flora and Fauna:


Royal Bengal Tigers are the main draw of the region but one can also spot Saltwater Crocodiles, various primates, leopards, King Cobras and India Cobras.

The region is also known best for the eclectic varieties of birds. Around 260 different species of birds have been recorded to reside in the region. Other mostly available and most popular animals that are found here include the Gangetic River Dolphins, 50 species of reptiles and around 15 species of amphibians.

Climate:
  • October to February — winter, cool and temperate
  • March to May — summer, hot and humid
  • June to September — the monsoon season, wet and windy
